Powered Access-Focused Agenda Announced for July’s SAF-T Conference, Presented by Maximum Capacity Media

The schedule for the SAF-T Conference is taking shape, offering a variety of thought-provoking topics centered around safely using powered access, developing fall protection programs, and training access platform users through an array of technologies. Hosted by Maximum Capacity Media on July 24, 2013, in Nashville, Tenn., the live powered access safety event will take place in conjunction with the Scaffold & Access Industry Association’s Annual Convention at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel.

“Now in its sixth year, the SAF-T Conference has been held as a live event and as a web conference, providing information to thousands on the safe use of access platforms in North America,” said Guy Ramsey, president of Maximum Capacity Media and publisher of Lift and Access, official publication of the SAF-T Conference. “With presentations centered on the theme ‘Safety through Technology,’ operators, fleet managers, safety professionals, and equipment owners will learn the benefits of online training, interactive safety tools, and more at the SAF-T Conference this July.”

Joining the agenda is Mike Willliamsen, Ph.D., CSP senior safety consultant for Caterpillar Safety Services. Discussing the value of near-miss reporting, Williamsen’s presentation will review one of the most interactive safety tools to eliminate injuries. It will detail how individuals work together to solve close-call problems that put all employees at risk.

Other presenters at the SAF-T Conference include Jim Dorris, vice president of environmental, health and safety at United Rentals, who will kick off the day with the Opening Session focused on safety obtained through innovation and technology. Jeff Stachowiak, national safety training director at Sunbelt Rentals, will moderate a roundtable of major contractors and lead a discussion on working at heights with powered access equipment, and William Cochran, director of OSHA’s Nashville office, will share the impact of fall prevention campaigns. Another roundtable on online powered access training and familiarization, led by United Rentals, will take place at the conference, and Brad Boehler, president of Skyjack will wrap up the day, showing safe movement of equipment on jobsites.

SAF-T Conference Returns as a Webinar
September 21, 2010 – Following the success of the 2009 SAF-T Conference webinar, MCM Events, a division of publisher Maximum Capacity Media, Fort Dodge, Iowa, will host the educational event in a similar format—only this year, presenters will speak over the course of four days, and the webinars will be free. The web conference will focus on aerial work platform safety topics that will be addressed by some of the industry’s leading training professionals. The sessions will run from Nov. 15-18 for approximately one hour each day. Each year, the SAF-T Conference webinar intends to reach a broad audience to effectively raise aerial lift safety awareness. The quality and variety of attendees at the 2009 conference included safety managers from companies like DuBois Chemicals, Cianbro, Amgen, Entegris, ArcelorMittal, BAE Systems, and Kimberly-Clark. Training organizations, operators, unions, rental yards, crane and rigging companies that use AWPs, and industrial forklift distributors also attended the annual event, as well as representatives from engineering schools at educational institutes like at Penn State, Winona State University, and Michigan Tech.

December 15, 2009 – Lift and Access magazine, published by Maximum Capacity Media, Fort Dodge, Iowa, hosted its third annual Safe Access, Fall Protection & Training (SAF-T) Conference last week, presenting the event for the first time as a webinar. The online event, held Dec. 10, extended the conference’s reach to a national level.Nine speakers shared their safety expertise during the eight presentations, which covered topics including training, aerial work platform maintenance, fall protection and fall arrest, and ANSI compliance, among others. Guy Ramsey, publisher of Lift and Access, said he was pleased with the caliber of attendees. “What I was most excited about was not only the quality of the attendees but the variety. The safety managers or directors from companies like DuBois Chemicals, Cianbro, Amgen, Entegris, ArcelorMittal, BAE Systems, and Kimberly-Clark were in attendance,” Ramsey said. “Training organizations, operators, unions, rental yards, crane and rigging companies that use AWPs, and industrial forklift distributors also attended, to name a few. August 11, 2009 – Maximum Capacity Media’s SAF-T Conference will enter the digital realm this year, as the company announces it will hold the event as a webinar 10 a.m. EST on Thurs., Dec. 10. The conference’s agenda will continue to focus on its principle goals of clarifying industry expectations, promoting professional communication, and stimulating discussion to further aerial work platform safety development.

Previously billed as a regional event, the SAF-T Conference webinar will reach a broader national audience this year. Sponsors for the event include Skyjack, Aerial Work Platform Training Inc., and Ives Training Group.

As always, the SAF-T Conference will be packed with thought-provoking topics, ranging from operator training to machine maintenance and modifications to fall protection. Tentative presentations for the webinar include:

Aerial Work Platform Operator Training: What is appropriate instruction as prescribed in the ANSI A92 standards? How do equipment owners or users/renters know if they are complying with these responsibilities?
Training Liability Issues: If an aerial work platform operator is injured after instruction, what is the safety trainer’s level of liability? Does his current insurance cover this potential danger?
Responsibilities at the Sale: With a larger number of equipment currently being sold at auction, how does the owner comply with ANSI’s requirements to deliver the proper documents and manuals? Who is responsible: the owner or the auction company?
Raising the Bar for AWP Users and Owners: What responsibilities do aerial work platform owners and users have? This session provides a general overview of key responsibilities and resources available to comply with current ANSI and industry standards.
Familiarization: What is appropriate training, and how does familiarization differ from training? What does the requirement for familiarization on each model or specific machine really mean?
Machine Maintenance: What does it mean to properly maintain (not repair) equipment? What are the requirements for daily pre-start inspections (per the manufacturer’s recommendations), frequent and annual inspections, and workplace inspections?
Machine Modifications: Improper and unsafe modifications are being made to AWPs without manufacturer approval. What are, if any, appropriate modifications, and what are the proper steps to be taken when considering any modifications?
Replacement Parts: What does the term “equivalent” really mean as prescribed by the ANSI standards. This session discusses when and if it is appropriate to utilize off-the-shelf or aftermarket parts.
ANSI Compliance for Managers: As stated in the ANSI standard, users “shall monitor their performance, and supervise their work to ensure the use, application, and operation in conformance with the standard, warn personnel of the hazards, provide a means to protect against, and explain consequences.” Is your manager knowledgeable enough to monitor and ensure compliance with this requirement?
